Best Vegetarian Dishes-Trouble With Vegetarian Lasagna
Posted by John Caccamese at May 2nd, 2010 in Nutrition
I was just sitting here thinking about one of my favorite vegetarian dishes, vegetable lasagna. Oh what a great taste, especially if you know what your doing, and you use fresh produce. Notice how I said fresh produce. Well here is my story of how I messed up my first try at vegetarian lasagna.
What you really got to give some thought to is how fresh are the vegetables that are going into this vegetarian recipe. I decided to experiment with my “cost saving” version of the dish, and what a mess I made. Breaking open the freezer and utilizing such things as frozen spinach and string beans was my first mistake.
What I now understand is how frozen vegetables can be great in a pinch, but lousy if you want a really nice vegetarian dish. The water that comes naturally with the frozen vegetables can really compromise the recipe. As the frozen vegetables cook and heat up, the frozen water just seems to “pour” from them
Oh boy, was this a tough lesson for me to have actually experienced. I thought things would go great with the frozen vegetables. I figured between the time and the money I would save, I would look like a star. In reality, I looked like a fool, as the majority of this vegetarian recipe ended up in the waste basket.
Who said that vegetarian recipes are easy? Well my next mistake was that of utilizing the good old “jar sauce”. Yes I was in a bit of as rush, and I thought that this might do the trick for a quick vegetarian dish, but unfortunately it made matters worse.
Reflecting back on my mistake with the sauce was not easy, as I knew where I went wrong. You see I never read the ingredients, and it turned out to be a sauce for a “spicy hot chili”. Talk about not reading the labels. Between the spicy bottled sauce and the frozen vegetables, this vegetarian recipe was a disaster waiting to happen.
Another disaster in the kitchen I said. Well that’s my tale of woe. Don’t be tempted like I was to just save a buck and some time. The dish will truly suffer when you do that. If I would have used the correct ingredients in the first place, I would have been fine. Go the all natural fresh produce way when cooking vegetarian dishes.
