Bad breath is something that affects over 90 million people worldwide. It can be a source of embarrassment when dealing with others, from family, business, and personal relationships, to just dealing with the general public. Many people may not even be aware they have bad breath. Bad breath is also know as halitosis. People worldwide have been dealing with bad breath for centuries.
What are some of the causes? Well, traditionally, cases of “bad breath” can be linked to meals with plenty of garlic, onions, and other pungent and strong smelling foods or spices. These “cases” are temporary and aren’t a permanent problem. True chronic bad breath, or halitosis, usually is caused by a buildup of bacteria releasing amino acids after breaking down proteins. The two that are responsible for the foul smells are methyl mercaptan and hydrogen sulfide. Improper brushing and flossing can play a part in these buildups.
On occasion, though, medical conditions can be the root of the problem, such as gastrointestinal disturbances, postnasal drip, liver or kidney problems, diabetes, an infection in the respiratory tract, or chronic sinusitis or bronchitis.
Some ways to remedy bad breath: As is apparent, good dental hygiene is very important. Proper flossing and teeth brushing are key parts to that. Keep hydrated with water, chew gum, and eat raw vegetables to keep a good flow of saliva to prevent dry mouth. Also, avoid a lot of dairy, as this can cause a mucous buildup. Another good tip is tongue scraping because this helps reduce excess bacteria.
Bad breath may persist, and if after trying the above suggestions you find that yours does, you may need professional help to be able to cure your bad breath. On the market are advanced remedies and products that can help you with that goal.
