You should quit smoking, but mostly because you want to, not because you can’t afford it. Let me tell you how I quit. 1. Think of the cost in smoking. At 5 dollars a pack, it will set you back about $1800 dollars a year. You can go on a kick ass Caribbean vacation once a year for that money. 2. Cigarettes make you physically tired over time. You become way less active. So whats the best way to quit? I have to say cold turkey. When quitting cold turkey, you should follow these rules. 1. You’re addicted to cigarettes. Even one puff can being you back to addiction. You’re brain is just wired for it. Even if one puff doesn’t bring you back right away, psychologically you think you can get away with it. You’re more likely to try it again in the future. Make no mistake. You were addicted once, you will be addicted again if you start again. 2. You can shake your actual nicotine addiction in just a few days of stopping. Your brain adjusts. However smoking has a strong psychological component as well as physical. You’re just used to putting something in your mouth. You tend to smoke with coffee, booze, dinner, sex. Doing that over time conditions you to smoke after all those activities. 3. Ok, so after a few days you’re not smoking. You’re gun ho about stopping forever. Really do all the things you do when you want a cigarette. Your will is strong now. Have that coffee or drinks with your friends. Do it because you want to resist smoking when you usually smoke. Don’t avoid those activities. In 6 months if you didn’t build the resistance before, you will be tempted now, and your will be weaker because you’re over confident. 4. As you quit smoking, drink a lot of water, try exercise. At least go for long fast walks. Your metabolism slows a little once you quit and you put on more weight. Also some people like substituting food for cigarettes because of the same action of putting something in your mouth. That motion is a habit too. If you have that habit, use the water bottle as a surrogate. We all can use more water in our diet anyway. 5. If the urge is really great, take some really deep breaths. Load your lungs with oxygen. Makes me feel a little high doing that surprisingly. Just wait, the urge WILL pass. Just be strong. In the beginning the urges will be frequent, but as time goes on, they will be less and less. You will always have the urge from time to time. I’ve been smoke free for years, but once every few months I may get a split second urge to smoke. 6. Mile stone dates, 6 months, 1 year 5 years 10 years are great, but on those dates you feel a little overconfident. Be careful of your urges then. lastly, never look back. Think of tobacco as a weed that has your will in chains. It shouldn’t bind you and make you its slave. Think of all the people out in frigid temperatures, in the middle of winter, smoking outside a club or bar. They’re not outside enjoying the weather. Good Luck.
