Is Lasik Effective?

by Richard Farrah

If you are thinking about having Lasik surgery on your eyes to correct a vision problem then you do need to take some time researching how effective this kind of procedure can be. Like many surgical procedures this kind of treatment can work better for some people than for others and can bring with it certain risks and side effects.

The first thing you need to know is that Lasik cannot guarantee you 20/20 vision. You may well be able to get rid of your glasses and contact lenses because you will be able to see well enough without them but you may not come out of this kind of procedure with perfect vision. Most people, however, will see an improvement to their vision after their operation.

It is also important to remember that this kind of surgery cannot necessarily give you the kind of crisp and clear vision that you get from your glasses or contacts. It can make you see well enough not to need these aids any more but it won’t necessarily give you similar levels of vision.

Doctors here do attempt to correct your vision problem with the aim of giving you improved sight. It is estimated that just over half the people that have this kind of treatment will come out of it with 20/20 vision. But over 90% will come out of it with 20/40 vision.

Bear in mind that 20/40 vision is a great enough improvement for most of us and will allow you not to have to wear glasses/contacts for most tasks. But, in some cases you may still have to wear glasses or contacts to do certain things so you do need to be aware of this.

You should also be aware that your chances of success and improvement here often depend on the severity of your vision problem in the first place. For example, if you suffer from extreme short/near sightedness then your chances of visual improvement are less than those of an individual who has the same condition in a standard or mild form.

The kind of vision problems that you have may also play a part in the successful outcome of your eye surgery here. Some people with myopia, for example, report quicker and more obvious results that last longer than people who have hyperopia.

You may also find that your initial Lasik treatment does not give you the desired or expected results and your doctor may well recommend that you have an ‘enhancement’ procedure. Sometimes this kind of procedure will be used to improve results and sometimes to address issues arising from the original surgery.

You should also consider the fact that the results that you ultimately get with this kind of surgery may not be immediately apparent to you. Whilst many people having this kind of procedure do see an immediate improvement you cannot actually finally assess the success of a Lasik procedure once and for all until a good few months after the surgery has been completed.

I agree that your insecurities will still be there afterwards, but sometimes it is still worth it to get surgery.

I don’t know if it counts but I had laser eye surgery so I could live without glasses. Technically you don’t need it, so it’s considered a cosmetic surgery. I was definitely happier after I got it, while my issues were still there, I did feel a bit better about myself. However I also didn’t expect it to "cure" any of my issues. I went in with realistic expectations.

I think in the future if I had the money and a strong desire I might consider plastic surgery for other parts of my body. But I’d have to spend a long time thinking about it, that’s for sure!
