Hemorrhoids are the result of swelling and inflammation of the anal and rectal veins. In the U.S., approximately 75 percent of the population experiences hemorrhoids at some time during their lives. Normally they can be relieved with easy home remedies, but if they continually recur, surgery may be necessary.

So how can you tell if you have hemorrhoids? A number of specific symptoms help you decide. However, even if you think you have hemorrhoids, you should still consult with a physician to verify the diagnosis. Here are some warning signs to be aware of.

1) Pain - Pain is the hallmark symptom of hemorrhoids. It may be hemorrhoids if you feel pain when having a bowel movement, or feel pain for a long time after.

2) Rectal Itching - Rectal itching can be a sign that you have a hemorrhoid. The cause of this is moisture and stool on the rectum.

3. Pressure - Another symptom is pressure in the rectal area. The pressure is caused by the bulging hemorrhoid.

4) Bleeding - Rectal bleeding can be caused by hemorrhoids. When you are having a bowel movement, the bleeding can occur. When you pass stools, the pressure can result in bleeding. When the anus is swollen and inflamed, minor injury can occur as the stool passes through.

5) Bulges - Sometimes a bulge occurs on the anus when a person has external hemorrhoids. When the stool pushes downward on the anus, this happens.

6. An Anal Lump - A lump can be present on your anus. This is caused by a hemorrhoid that has a blood clot inside. Surgical removal may be necessary.

7) Unfinished Bowel Movements - If you usually have partial bowel movements, you might have hemorrhoids. This is defined as passing a little excrement and you still feel like you have to defecate, but can’t.

Hemorrhoids do not present a great many symptoms. So be mindful if you have any of them. Rectal or anal pain indicates a problem. Of course, hemorrhoids are not always the cause. There are other causes of rectal pain. If you begin having pain, the first thing that should be done is to see your doctor.

Be worried if you have rectal bleeding. Also bleeding can originate from different sources. A simple fissure may be the cause. This is a crack in the anal canal lining. Rectal cancer or polyps of the rectum could be present. Your doctor can tell you exactly what is happening.

There are simple treatments that can alleviate your hemorrhoids. But be sure to do something about them. If left unattended, they will continue to become more painful.
