The Quest For Best Omega 3 Sources.

We all know now that Omega 3 fats are good for us. Science has established that Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are very important for our health. But what are good Omega 3 sources that we can use to add more Omega 3 fats to our diet?

There are a number of Omega 3 fats including DHA, EPA and ALA. The first 2 of these are primarily found in marine based sources. Fish are very high in DHA and EPA and this is sourced from the algae that fish eat.

On the other hand ALA is only a plant-based Omega 3 fatty acid.

DHA is the most important of these 3 Omega 3 fats. DHA is responsible in large part for our brain development.

Unlike the other 2 fatty acids, ALA is not as important. That is because it cannot be synthesised directly into our bodies in our body to DHA first. This process is inefficient and therefore ALA is not a good source of high levels of Omega 3 fats.

For this reason the best dietary sources of Omega 3 fats is found in fish and fish based products. The American Heart Association recognises the benefits to our health of eating more fish however there is a conundrum. Fish is generally contaminated with toxins such as Mercury and this reason the FDA recommends against eating too much fish.

So it seems clear that we shouldn’t eat fish daily despite fish being an excellent Omega 3 source. The only way to take daily safe doses of Omega 3 fatty acids is to take the best fish oil supplements. Note though that although the best fish oil supplements are cleaned not all supplements are as good as others.

It doesn’t hurt though to add more plant-based Omega 3 sources to your diet. Oils such as canola oil, flax seed oil and olive oil are all rich in plant-based ALA and is worth using these instead of some of the oils you may use now.

What do you do if you’re vegetarian and cannot take oil? There are now vegetarian Omega 3 supplements which are very good DHA sources. These are made from algae as well.

So if you want to improve your health by increasing your food intake of Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids best Omega 3 source is to take daily fish oil supplements.
