Types and Causes Of Depression

Depression is a disease that can linger and progress for months and years without detection. It is not a disease to take lightly. Studies have shown that millions of Americans will suffer some form of depression this year. It is also estimated that less than a third will actually seek some form of treatment for their affliction. In many cases the afflicted do not even realize that they are ill.
Every day stress is common in the modern world. The road blocks in life have become more severe. With the recent economic crises, there are many feeling insecure and worried about their jobs and providing for themselves and their families. For many, the mounting financial problems are frightening. This combined with other stress leads to depression.
Countless types of depression exist. These include medical depression, clinical depression and manic depression. Severe depression refers to the most advanced form of the illness.
Depression can result from a variety of causes. One school of thought holds that it’s due to chemical imbalances or simple biology. DNA also carries depression. If your mother and great grandmother suffered depression it’s possible you will too.
Other common factors can lead to different types of depression as well. For example, depression is often the result of substance abuse. Both alcoholics and drug abusers can contract depression. Also, depression is more likely after a close person dies.
Mental depression historically has a stigma associated with it. It was considered a personal fault before it was recognized as a disease. There was very little treatment offered. Negative effects persist through all the stages of depression. Early detection, then, is necessary to fight depression.
Once the disease has progressed to severe depression the illness must be treated. Thoughts or attempts at suicide are not uncommon when depression has reached this level. For the sufferer, feelings of hopelessness and sadness can be so overwhelming that day to day living becomes extremely difficult.
Treatment is typically psychotherapy and anti-depressants. It is also helpful to join support groups that you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts with. There are also natural herbs you can use to treat the disease. There are options available to those who suffer from all types of depression.
