Why Most Probiotic Supplements Don’t Work

by Waldmar Jones

If youre taking probotics to ease your digestive problems, and you havent noticed any relief it may be because the one you choose does not contain the correct strains of bacteria or the strains are so weak and ineffective you cant possibly feel any benefit.

Lets review your digestive system. The lower stomach, small and large intestines contain healthy amounts of friendly bacteria called probiotics. An unhealthy digestive system has much lower levels of friendly bacteria and higher levels of unfriendly bacteria that cause many common digestive problems.

The friendly bacteria is essential for your overall health. First of all, they help break down the food you eat so that your body can absorb the nutrients. Second, they actually help your body create B Vitamins and digestive enzymes. Third they crowd out harmful bacteria like e coli and salmonella so they cant proliferate and do harm.

Thats why supplementing with a probiotic formula is important as you get older. But it is important to pick one that gives you excellent results. It is important to have the correct species and the correct strains. It should contain a balance of both major species, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria. It also should contain multiple strains of each of these species.

Read the labels, and youll see many of the supplements out there contain only one or two strains. When you see a formula that combines this many strains you know it is superior. Lactobacillus harnesses Bifidobacterium bifidum Lactobacillus acidophilus Lactobacillus casei Lactobacillus plantarum Lactobacillus salivarius Bifidobacterium longum Streptococccus thermophilus Lactobacillus bulgaricus Lactobacillus paracasei Bifidobacterium infantis

Also look at the labels and make sure they do not contain chemical additives, corn, gluten, MSG, pesticides, soy, fillers or artificial favors.

Reeferman gave an excellent answer, even if slightly incomplete. In addition to his answer can be added:

Liver, which creates bile and other digestive enzymes
Gall Bladder, which stores bile and excreets it into the duodenum, the first part of the small bowel through the
    Common Bile Duct

There are other (very) minor organ(elle)s which also contribute acids and enzymes to the digestive juices, but they aren't often considered as part of the digestive tract per-se.

sm — I didn’t get a chance to comment on your post, that is rant, which I loved, just let it fly sista… whoo hoo … but so sorry to hear about all the difficulties (and downright BS) you have been going through

Just something to offer you — I was going through some major probs a few years ago (injury at work) and other BS, and I found Hayhouse radio, which has streaming and archives you can access for free. Colette Baron-Reid has some of the most powerful meditations on her website that not only helped with my stress, I also felt rejuvenated and empowered. Plus she has some beautiful music for female inspiration. some cheap things to help with your gastritis — probiotics (Nature’s Bounty (sold at drugstores like Walgreens) has a Chewable Acidophilus with Bifidus, Activia (primarily has bifido bacterium), Lemon water mixed with juice of one lemon every day, digestive enzymes, and saltine crackers will help soothe it, pineapples have great digestive enzymes in it too. Also rubbing your abdomen with sesame/lavender oil with soothe it too. If you are having gall bladder issues, definitely increase your essential fatty acids (fish oil, flaxseed oil, olive oil); fish oil and flaxseed oil can be purchased through NatureMade (also a drugstore find, which every couple of weeks have a buy one get one free).

Just wanted to share some remedies that our cost effective since I was battling trying to use natural health remedies on a very low budget.

This is truly extraordinary. I never thought I’d live to see this day: US Catholic bishops taking on the American state.
They must be seeing that BO’s "Catholic strategy" is divide-and-conquer. The Voice of the Faithful and Call to Action people are only too ready to enable the handful of aging Baby Boomer clerics/academics who want to revive their "glory days" in the late 1960s and 1970s. Bishop D’Arcy gave a splendid statement, let’s pray that he may follow up with a demand that ND either withdraw its invitation to BO or forfeit the Catholic franchise.
I think the bishops are acting most courageously in this matter, and I think it’s very important for laity and priests to stand up and express solidarity with them.
Think what might have happened (for the good of Germany and the world) if German Catholics had stood in solidarity with Bishop von Galen and the Pope against AH’s anti-life policies.

Digestion: the process of metabolism in which an organism chemically and mechanically converts an ingested substance into a form that the body can use!

Chemical disgestion is the release of digestive enzymes such as proteases (which specifically break down proteins) and lipases (which specifically break down lipids, or fats.) Most of this digestion occurs in the stomach.

Mechanical digestion is the mechanical movements a body goes through to break down food, for example, chewing, or your stomach churning.

I hope this helps! (if you need more info please feel free to email/add on to your question!) =]
