Why Snoring Is Considered A Relationship Killer
Posted by Janice Barber at Aug 17th, 2010 in Allergies
It’s not at all amusing to sleep in the same room with somebody who snores. So imagine if your husband or wife does. I bet it’s never a pleasant sleeping night every night. It is not the same for the one who snores because he or she is sleeping while the snoring happens, he or she won’t even notice.
Snoring may be hilarious in TV sitcoms and in jokes but in real life, it is a truly serious topic. It puts strain to relationships. You’re very lucky if you have a roommate who can sleep through heavy noises at night. But if that’s not the case, then your spouse probably doesn’t enjoy the lovely days ahead after having restless nights.
It doesn’t matter how much you love your spouse. What is clear to you is that you are being deprived of your sleep, and somehow you feel that it is kind of selfish of your spouse to have a straight good night’s sleep while you lie awake unable to take the bear anymore.
Although snoring is unintentional, you can still do something to stop it. If you are the one who snores, you can try the following steps:
Shed off some pounds. It may sound too harsh but studies prove that obesity plays a big factor in snoring. Next step is to lessen your alcohol intake. You muscles can relax more without inebriants. Smoking also increases the clogging in your throat, lungs, and nasal passages. And when your passageways are clogged, it bars the flow of air during your sleep.
Some snorers are also going for chin straps. What chip straps do is hold the mouth shut so the snorer is forced to breathe through their nose during sleep. There are also those who try hypnosis to stop their snoring.
Before purchasing any new gadgets, it is still best to consult an ENT specialist first. Doctors specializing in ear, nose, and throat can help find where your snoring is coming from. You may have enlarged tonsils or other swollen tissues that cause the problem.
Some may find the mentioned measures not only bothersome but also expensive. However, if you care about your partner, then no step is too bothersome or expensive for you. Think about it, even though you believe you’re not the one who suffers with your snoring (you do, there are health risks with snoring), you are letting your loved one suffer every night. And with one of you unhappy and stressed, your relationship will plummet.
