Why your muscles need a day of rest

Have you ever noticed that some people spend far too much time weightlifting? In fact, you may be one of those people yourself. It reminds me of when I took some personal lessons from a trainer in a local gym.
While I was there I noticed that there were a few trainees that seemed to be showing up every day and always hung out in the same area. They seemed to be performing the same exercises every day without any rest for the muscles. Meanwhile, I was just there to get some lessons for my trainer.
I’ve learned a few things about weightlifting, and I’ve also come to understand some mistakes among beginners. Over training is one of those common mistakes.
Believe it or not, over training can result in a number of significant symptoms. You can actually becoming ill if you don’t give your body a chance to recover after a series of long hard workouts.
However, even if you don’t work your body to the point of developing an illness, you can still impede your progress by not giving your body a chance to rest.
The basic principle here is that exercise stimulates your muscle to grow, as long as the muscle is challenged beyond its previous limits. However, the actual growth of the muscle occurs at rest, not in the gym.
One way to tell if you have been doing too much weight lifting lately is to record your progress. Ideally, you should be able to increase the weight slightly during each new session. If you can’t do this, or if you can’t even repeat your previous load, you’re probably overdoing it.
The bottom line is that you need to be cautious and take care of your body. When it comes to weightlifting, learn as much as you can about all aspects including the recovery phase. The right amount of rest can actually boost results and keep you healthy.
